Colombians are warm and welcoming, embracing a rich cultural mix of Indigenous, African, and Spanish heritage. Their vibrant festivals feature music, dance, and colorful parades year-round.

Equipment

For bird photography in Colombia, bring a camera with a 400mm+ lens, extra memory cards, backup storage, a laptop, rain cover, and silica gel to protect gear from humidity. Versatile equipment ensures you're ready for every photo opportunity.

Clothes

Wear light, quick-drying green or brown clothing for camouflage. Equip yourself with a wide-brimmed hat, waterproof jacket, long pants, hiking boots, sunscreen, and, most importantly, insect repellent. Some times it is necesary Rubber Boots.

Transport

Depending on the group size, if there are one to three photographers, we will use 4x4 trucks. For larger groups, transportation will be provided in vans or buses. Cleanliness and comfort are always guaranteed.

Our backbone of NATURE in Colombia

RETORNO began with the simple mission of exploring an undiscovered Colombia through nature tourism. As we ventured into remote regions, we found that opportunities were as scarce as the roads that led us there. Local communities faced challenges—limited access to education, services, and decent living conditions—and the rich landscapes they called home were starting to deteriorate. Deforestation, pollution, and hidden forces damaged not only the environment but also the families who depended on it. Today, these threats remain, intensified by the loss of traditions and ecosystems. RETORNO believes the only way forward is to empower those who have long cared for these lands—peasants, indigenous people, Afro-descendants—to restore and protect them. **We had a splendid birding adventure with Retorno Birding Tours and David in Colombia!**


The tour was meticulously planned, covering top reserves and mesmerizing species perfectly suited for us. Amid beautiful Colombian reserves, two ladies traveling from India enjoyed a comfortable and safe birding experience. Stays were top-notch, and the delicious vegetarian food made everything even better. David expertly timed feeder and field sessions for stunning bird photographs—we had an absolute blast!

We engaged RETORNO Photo Tours to arrange a private, two-week birding/photo tour for our family group of 8 (all older adults) to the Santa Marta and Bogota areas of Colombia. The tour was complex in that two members of the group could only stay for the first week, so we had to pass back through Bogota to get them back to the US. All of this was handled very smoothly by David. From the first interaction in inquiring about a possible trip to the end of our visit, David was always positive, engaged, and immensely helpful. As we worked on the trip, our plans were modified, the number of participants changed, the dominant interest of the group evolved, but David was always willing to work through it. Since we were primarily on a birding trip, with photography as a secondary interest, we were guided by Miguel, with the assistance of several local guides. Miguel was a great bird guide but also very good at dealing with evolving and often quickly changing logistics. We were often in remote and rugged areas with sometimes poorly developed infrastructure, but we were always looked after very well. We always felt safe and comfortable. The trip was an immense success, and I would highly recommend using David and the RETORNO company for your next Colombia birding or bird photography adventure.
